Description

It's LIFE Jim is a screen saver based on the LIFE algorithm (also referred to as 'The game of life') developed by John Horton Conway and popularized by Martin Gardner, but with various bits and bobs added to make it that little more mesmerizing.

Features

  • Graphic effects to make it that little more mesmerizing.
  • Screen edge wrap around, one thing I didn't like with other life programs was the fact that the 'world' ended at the edge of the screen.
  • Act of God, if the cycle goes into and endless loop, e.g.. the spinner, then an act of God will create more life to get things going again. With this you truly just sit back and watch.
  • Armageddon, kills all life cells after so many cycles, this is mainly to stop the screen saver becoming it's own worst enemy.
  • Various palette schemes to complement the graphic effects.
  • Various configurable options to customize it to your tastes.
  • Various 'interactive' keys to mess around with it during run time.

Other Information

A focus on the graphics effects :-
  • Plasma - First up we have the plasma effect, similar to those found in demos gone by, the cells that die fade away to nothing creating the effect. There are two variations of this effect that fade through the palette slightly differently.
  • Mutant Blob - Each cell extends outwards making up a blob, if cells pass close together the join up making a bigger blob. There is an alternative version of this effect for the slower machines but can cause a slight 'vibrating' graphic artifact with some palette schemes due to the faster method the cells are processed.
  • Heated - Based on the mutant blob effect the cells heat up the area around them, it may seem like it's the same as the mutant blob effect but believe me, it's diffrent. As with mutant blob there is an alternative version of this effect for the slower machines but can cause a slight 'vibrating' graphic artifact with some palette schemes due to the faster method the cells are processed.
There is at present no planned future development on this program hence the unofficial release.
